There are four main commodity categories that traders can invest in. Metals are an important commodity for investors, as they historically hold their value better than the average asset, especially gold. During times when the markets are volatile, investors will look towards precious metals to keep stability in their portfolios. The most common metals that are traded are platinum, gold, silver, and copper.
Agriculture is a large commodities market; it encompasses a variety of crops including cocoa, coffee, corn, cotton, rice, sugar and soybean. This can be a volatile market, especially with grains, whose production can fluctuate drastically due to seasonal and climatic changes.
Energy is another large market, and it includes assets such as crude oil, gasoline, heating oil, and natural gas. However with oil supplies getting lower across the globe, and renewable energy sources being in higher demand, the non-renewable energy market is shifting into a period of volatility.
Livestock and meat is the fourth category. This consists of animals such as feeder cattle, live cattle, lean hogs, poultry and sheep for wool. This category is not as popular for investors as the other three; nevertheless, these markets continue to grow each year.
